How to pick a good nickname
- Say it out loud. A good name is easy for friends to call out and easy to spot in a busy chat.
- Leave out personal details. Your full name, birth year, school or town make you easy to identify.
- Avoid look-alike characters. Mixing 0 and O, or 1, l and I, makes you hard to find and add as a friend.
- Think long term. Slang ages fast. A word that will still feel right in a year or two saves you a rename.
- Check before you commit. See whether the name is taken on the service you use, and whether it means something odd in another language.
Getting the most out of each style
Cute names pair soft adjectives with animals and snacks. Cool names mix colors and weather with nouns like wolf or ranger. Short names are easy to remember but often taken, so allow numbers and symbols for a few variations. Type your name or a favorite thing into the word box to mix it into the results. Lock the names you like, generate again, and only the others change.
Gamertag length limits: characters or bytes?
Every game and app sets its own rules. Many count characters, some count bytes. Plain English letters and digits take 1 byte each, but accented letters take 2 bytes in UTF-8, and Korean, Japanese or Chinese characters usually take 2 bytes in older double-byte encodings and 3 in UTF-8. Many services also block spaces, symbols or emoji. Read the sign-up rules first, then paste your pick into the length and byte checker below to compare all three counts.
About the word lists
TextDesk combines adjectives, nouns, prefixes and suffixes that we chose ourselves. There are no brand, character or celebrity names, and a blocklist filters rude or unfortunate combinations. Random combinations can still be odd now and then, so give your favorite a quick read before you use it.
